Background:
Contemporary R&B, known simply as R&B is a type/genre of music that is made up of other genres such as blues, soul, funk, pop, hip-hop and dance. It originated in North America; the genre rose/became popular in the early 1980s.

Instruments Used:
Typical instruments used in R&B songs are keyboards, synthesizers, drum machines/drums, horns and some percussion instruments.

Old Artists Vs New Artists (Important Artists/Artists who contribute the most to the R&B genre.)
R&B today isn't how it was years ago. it was originally founded in the 1940s. It was originally called "Race Music" as was usually only performed and listened to by the black race. Old R&B artists include Prince, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and many more. Their music was more calming as it had more of a blues/jazz feel to it. Compared to the modern R&B artists (who turned original R&B to Contemporary R&B) such as The Weeknd, Chris Brown, Drake and Trey Songz, their songs contain other elements of music and genres such as hip-hop. They've changed what R&B sounds like due to factors such as their music style and modern music equipments such as synthesizers which old R&B artists didn't have.

R&B Influences and Where It Originated
R&B started during the migration of African-Americans to the urban industrial centres of Chicago, Detroit, New York and Los Angeles in the 1920s and 1930s. During these times, there was a new market for Jazz and Blues and other related genres, performed in small groups of full time musicians. Artists such as the Harlem Hamfats merged these genres and generally formed a new genre called R&B (Rhythm and Blues). R&B is also influenced by the Afro-Cuban Rhythmic influence known as the"habanera"
